Whoo hoo! Chris was so awesome with my students. I would love to have him in a residency for writing. His presentation is called "Turning Life into Fiction." You can read more about it in Cathy Zimmerman's excellent story on The Daily News site. (Speaking of Cathy, what is with The Daily News? They told her to pack up, she no longer worked for them! Their best writer. What a shame after 25 years of amazing writing!!!) Many of the English staff went to dinner with him on Sunday night and he included everyone in conversations. He had talked with the author of Friday Night Lights and talked with our "Sports in Literature" teacher about the author as the rest of us listened. It was fascinating. Jerry drove me, thank goodness. I felt like such a cripple.
The next day went really well. Kids liked Chris very much. He was really easy going, even when the KLTV production went over and some kids left without him signing books, etc. The night talk was attended by college students and adults who howled at his stories. Chris talked three times and only told one story twice. His introducer, Katie, leaned over to me and said that she felt so lucky to come to all three talks as they were all different! I was on a euphoric high, and decided that Monday went so well, I would go to school on Tuesday. One word: PAIN!!!!! I made an appointment with an L&I doctor, having turned in my accident report on Monday, interviewed with the ESD rep for a case number, went to the doctor on Wednesday, then MRI, and a temporary handicap permit! So, after Memorial Day I am ready to head back to work with little walking (right), no stairs, no squatting or kneeling. Now I am having compensation pain in my other ankle and knee from babying the hurt one. But overall, doing much better. I wonder if the doctor is in Monday to read the MRI?
Jerry just left (9;40 PM) to do some grocery shopping. I armed him with a list that we reviewed, the FM membership barcode, FM cash coupons, and my debit card. I think he can do this in 3 calls.... lol We are low, low, low on anything that doesn't come from our food storage or the freezer. Actually, the freezer is pathetic also.
Well, that is the excitement here!

Two calls thus far....
I lost! We are up to 7 phone calls. hehehe!
That last one was Benita, not me!
Wow, this has been one long, albeit euphoric, undertaking for you....and with a bad knee! I hope all is going well with your Mom since it
seems like you have a lot on your plate right now. That 'Turning life into Fiction' presentation sounds very intriguing! Can't believe all you have taken
on, they should be begging you to stay next year. You know, our district is really unusual since all the ones around us have cut so many jobs and we have only lost a .5 position in all of the elementary schools. I went to the Supt. meeting on Tuesday and listened to all he did to preserve our jobs and have
such tremendous respect for him. He said he was embarrassed by how other supt. in other districts took the easy way out.
I'm so happy to get the holiday time off as I sure need a break. Things are going well though and I shouldn't complain. Torre enters the MTC a week from Tuesday and we're making all kinds of little trips for necessities and extras. I'm going to miss shopping with Torre. It's excruciating, but
oddly enjoyable too as I make it a challange to overcome all his objections and subvert his intention to just buy one thing and hurry home. I do it so
well now; I found myself giggling uncontrollably in Penneys as he argued with my plan to have him try on a white shirt. I told him how much I was
going to miss our shopping matches between bouts of laughter, tears streaming down my cheeks and he finally had to admit that he couldn't
stay angry with me laughing. We got the shirt and 15 more. He looks so cool in his new suits. Hard to say good bye to your baby.
Brinton is enjoying his internship at KJR hugely - he got on the air last night during the after-game radio broadcast with Jeff Nelson. He's
gotten to know him during the games when Nelson sits with him in the press booth and Nelson kids him relentlessly. Carey explained to
me tonight that in baseball it's a rite of passage to be totally embarrassed by older players and that Brinton is actually being accorded an honor.
We stayed up til midnight in order to hear the show since the game lasted til the 12th inning. Brint was kidded about his eating hot dogs, ice cream and being a Red Sox fan...none of which is true...and also asked for his opinion of the hero and goat of the game. He did well, and they noticed that
he had asked the pitcher, Vargas an after-game question during the interview after the game. More kidding - and he loves it. Now if he only got paid - ha!
Dan and his dad and Tyler, Brint and Torre are all going down to Utah in another week. I have to stay and teach. You know, I didn't really
enjoy taking Carey down; I was sad, especially all the way home so maybe this is better. Sure going to miss Torre these next two years but
couldn't be happier for him, and I know he'll be fine.
Benita
